Pia Ocampo was a diver first and fell in love with marine life before she fully committed her time to creating Pure Oceans- an organization dedicated to protecting the sea while at the same time empowering coastal communities. It’s no wonder Pure Oceans was established and has already collaborated with different communities (and even diving groups) through its projects.
It's estimated that the Philippines dumps 2.7M tons of plastic into the ocean. Pure Oceans' mission is to divert as much plastic waste as it can from our precious reefs!Pure Ocean has already taken steps in working with communities and have been in talks with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines and environment advocate, Senator Risa Hontiveros in their projects.
Ever wonder what happens to all the plastic collected by Pure Oceans?
Pure Ocean empowers each of its partner communities to collect and recycle it, transforming waste into useful products for the day-to-day life of these communities, like school chairs or building materials. Moreover, the ingenious ways of recycling plastic allow some communities to create new livelihoods by selling innovative products like design recycled shoes! The possibilities of upcycling are endless!
